There’s something about a lottery winner. Every single person that wins the lottery gives the rest of us hope. Every time we switch on the TV and see someone pick up one of those over sized cheques we see ourselves. The lottery is about dreams and aspiration. Sure the odds can be long, but at £2 for a Euromillions ticket and $2 for the Megamillions (if you buy them at a local retailer) isn’t it worth a chance? Isn’t it? These guys certainly thought so. Here are the the 5 biggest lottery winners of all time.
The 5 Biggest Lottery Winners Ever!
1. David Kaltschmidt and Maureen Smith.
Meet David Kaltschmidt and his wife Maureen Smith from Florida, USA, The biggest lottery winners of all time. This couple won a $528.7 million (£370m) share of the biggest jackpot in lottery history, an eye watering $1.5 billion!
Although only winning a third of the massive $1.5 billion jackpot (huh only!) David and Maureen nevertheless still became, together with regular churchgoers John and Lisa Robinson from Tennessee and another lucky winner in California, the biggest lottery winners of all time in January of 2016.
2. John and Lisa Robinson.
3. Merle and Patricia Butler.
Merle and Patricia Butler of Red Bud, Illinois, USA were, together with winners from Maryland and Kansas the previous biggest lottery winners scooping a share of a whopping $656 million.
Merle and Patricia waited three weeks before claiming their winnings. No need to rush these things, it takes about three weeks to write your shopping list. Merle purchased his $3 Quick Pick ticket on Wednesday, March 28 2012 at the Red Bud Moto Mart in Illinois. Certainly the best purchase he has ever made in his life.
The winners from Maryland were a mini syndicate calling themselves “The Three Amigos”. These guys who were all teachers had pooled their money to buy 60 tickets. They intended to celebrate their win by getting tattoos of the winning numbers 🙂
4. Harold Diamond.
The daddy of them all has to be 80 year old Harold Diamond of Wurtsboro, Sullivan County, USA. Technically Harold is the biggest single ticket lottery winner of all time as on November 4, 2014 he won an awesome $326 million jackpot. Holy schmoly!
The winning numbers were 09 15 24 39 41 and the Mega Ball was 01. Harold, bless him, bought the tickets after seeing the Megamillions logo flashing on a lottery terminal as he was eating in his local Subway restaurant.
5. Adrian and Gillian Bayford.
The biggest Euromillions winners were Adrian and Gillian Bayford from Haverhill in Suffolk, UK. This couple won the enormous sum of €190 million (£148 million) in August 2012.
Their story would make a sizeable blog post of it’s own as sadly things didn’t end well for this couple. Adrian and Gillian went their separate ways not long after when Gillian ran off with a used car salesman. Still we are guessing that Adrian still had another 95 million reasons to stay cheerful.
* In October 2014 another €190 million was won by a Portuguese ticket holder.
